The County Auditor's primary duty is to oversee financial record keeping for the county and to assure that all expenditures comply with the county budget. The County Judge and the County Auditor are required to prepare the annual budget. The County Auditor, by law, has continuous access to the books and financial records and conducts detailed reviews of all county financial operations.

Every two years, the state District Judges in Lee County appoint the County Auditor. The District Judges set the County Auditor's salary as well as the salaries of the Auditor's staff. Because the Auditor is neither appointed by nor under the hierarchical control of the administrative body (Commissioners Court), the integrity of county finances is protected by a dual system of "checks and balances".
